PGE employees donate record-breaking $1.43 million to local organizations
Sixty-two percent of PGE employees participate in this year’s giving campaign
Portland, Ore. — Portland General Electric employees set a new record during the company’s annual Employee Giving Campaign this year raising more than $1.43 million (including PGE’s 50 percent match) for community organizations.
“I am honored to work with such generous and compassionate coworkers,” said Peggy Fowler, CEO and president of PGE. “This annual giving program continues to grow each year because it is built on a strong foundation of more than 100 years of PGE employees’ commitment to the communities where they live and work.”
The 2007 PGE Employee Giving Campaign totals $1,438,708 with 62 percent of employees participating and benefiting more than 835 nonprofits and schools. This percentage of participation nearly doubles the national employee giving average of 35 percent. This year’s campaign beat last year’s record of $1,411,128 by nearly two percent.
During the annual Employee Giving Campaign, PGE’s 2,700 employees and more than 1,000 retirees can designate any charitable nonprofit or accredited school to receive their pledges and PGE matches their contributions by 50 percent. The three-week campaign ran from Sept. 24-Oct. 12, 2007. Since the company match program began in 1998, PGE employees and retirees have contributed more than $8.9 million to their communities through the campaign.
For 2007, top local recipients include:
- Providence Cancer Research Center
- Oregon Food Bank
- Doernbecher Childrens Hospital Foundation
- Oregon Burn Center
- Oregon Public Broadcasting
- SOLV
- United Way of the Columbia-Willamette and United Way of Columbia county
- Oregon HEAT
- Work for Art
Many PGE employees organize and participate in fun and creative interactive fundraisers and this year’s events, ranging from egg tosses to pet psychic readings, were no exception. This year’s largest events benefited the Providence Cancer Research Center. The fifth annual PGE and IBEW Local 125 Cancer Research Bowling Fundraiser earned more than enough funds to purchase a $61,000 Odyssey Infrared Imaging System for Providence Cancer Research Center.
As this year’s top recipient, the Providence Cancer Research Center will receive nearly $84,000.
“We are so grateful to PGE and its employees for their much-needed support year after year,” said Cindy Silveira, development director at Providence Cancer Center. “This year’s support will purchase an important imaging system that will allow us to expedite our research process. Any time we do that, we get closer to finding better treatments or a cure for cancer. This would not be possible without the support of strong community partners like PGE.”
In addition to making monetary donations to their favorite organizations, PGE employees and retirees also give freely of their personal time. During 2007 alone, PGE volunteers are expected log nearly 80,000 volunteer hours with their favorite nonprofit organizations.
