Simple Fixes
Simple Fixes
Check out these easy, low-cost ways to cut your refrigeration energy use.
Simple Fixes
  • Check that refrigerator and freezer doors seal properly.
  • Train staff to load coolers and freezers correctly to ensure optimal airflow. This will let the air you pay to cool circulate properly — protecting your product and your customers’ safety, and saving you lots of money.
  • Clean refrigerator and freezer coils frequently. Payback for this simple task is well under one year.
  • Maintain strip curtains. This is another quick-return practice, with a payback of one to two years.
  • Allow for air flow around each unit. Be sure to leave about one-inch clearance on the sides and four inches at the back.
  • Check temperature settings. Recommended settings are typically -14 to -8 degrees for freezers and 35 to 38 degrees for refrigerators.
  • A “tuneup” of your refrigeration controls can cut electricity consumption for refrigeration by four to eight percent, improve equipment capacity, reduce maintenance and downtime, and protect your products. Make it part of your annual maintenance. A tuneup can include the following steps:
    • Measure superheat values and adjust thermostatic expansion valves to a target superheat.
    • Adjust condenser holdback valves, condenser fan sequencing and head pressure control settings.
    • Reduce suction pressure set-points.
    • Verify that existing compressor heat reclaim systems are functioning properly.
