Sometimes, if the power goes out, Kellie Cloud might be asked to solve an engineering problem in the middle of the night.
It’s all part of her job as a system protection engineer. When there is a disturbance on the electrical system, Kellie analyzes what happened and helps pinpoint the location of the problem. She also works on design, monitoring and simulations to help limit outages.
“We can’t completely eliminate tree branches falling on power lines or cars hitting utility poles. But we design our transmission and distribution system to respond as best as it possibly can to these situations,” she says. “That way, we minimize power interruptions for customers.”
