In recent years, Oregon schools have struggled with student achievement scores and funding issues. At PGE, we’ve rolled up our sleeves and pitched in to help.

PGE employee volunteers serve on school boards and individual school foundations, help shape education policy, and raise money for schools.

Some of the school improvement programs that PGE supports are listed below. We invite you to visit their Web sites to learn more and see how you can become involved, too.

  • Oregon Education ChampionE3: Employers for Education Excellence, a statewide nonprofit organization working with employers and schools to boost student achievement. E3 promotes high academic standards and strong community involvement to prepare all Oregon students for success in post-secondary education and employment.

  • The Chalkboard Project is aimed at involving thousands of people in strengthening Oregon’s public schools. The goal is to inspire Oregonians to do what it takes to make the state’s K-12 schools among the nation’s best while living within its means. It seeks to create a more informed and engaged public that addresses the tough issues of quality, accountability and funding.

  • The Leaders Roundtable is an ad hoc group of elected officials and top educational and private sector leaders in Multnomah County who come together to focus on student success. Its geographic focus is Multnomah County. The Leaders Roundtable was formed in 1983 to counter the problem of youth unemployment and school dropouts, particularly among low income and ethnic minority youth. In the years since its formation it has had its primary focus on student success, ensuring that all children complete their schooling with the skills needed to access post-secondary education or work.

PGE also supports educational programs, including:

  • Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement, a champion for Hispanics in Oregon, ensuring equity in education and economic opportunity by empowering Latino youth. OCHA’s educational and advocacy activities empower Hispanics to make positive changes in their lives to optimize their future success.

  • Portland YouthBuilders, a program of Portland Public Schools. PYB engages previously out-of-school young people in a comprehensive youth development program that includes educational, leadership development and vocational training. Students work to obtain their high school diploma or GED while they acquire building trades and job readiness skills through hands-on experience building affordable housing in their communities.

  • Schoolhouse Supplies collects surplus products from businesses and individuals in our community to stock a unique store for Portland Public School teachers — where everything is free! This program touches the lives of thousands of children in need and helps teachers create an exceptional learning environment.
