A Changing Energy Mix
PGE's changing energy mix

PGE Energy Sources in 2008 and 2012

A diverse energy portfolio enables PGE to deliver our customers reliable power at a reasonable cost.

Did you know that PGE electricity is made six different ways? Having a diverse mix of generation sources helps us meet your power needs.

Too narrow a dependence on one particular resource can threaten reliability. As our engineers say, “Sometimes the wind doesn’t blow, and sometimes the water doesn’t flow.” So it’s important to have other power sources available for our customers.

Diversification ensures reliability
Over the next five years, we will continue to refine our resource mix, reducing, for example, the role of coal and natural gas in favor of more renewables and greater energy efficiency. See the sidebar for details.

These changes help us avoid putting all our energy eggs in one basket, and are also a direct reflection of Oregon values. It’s part of why we say PGE is “Powered by Oregon.”

We’re also expanding energy efficiency programs in partnership with Energy Trust of Oregon, the Oregon Department of Energy and low-income assistance agencies. PGE seeks to increase the amount of load met through efficiency measures by an additional 45 megawatts by 2012, beyond the amount already targeted.

Plans for meeting our future energy needs were developed with extensive input from our customers.

Planning for tomorrow
This strategy will serve as a bridge to the future as we work toward the development of solar, wave and biomass energy technologies. In this way, we can ensure a bright energy future for Oregon.
