Reregulating Dam
The Reregulating Dam allows PGE to maintain a relatively constant flow on the Deschutes, mimicking that of the natural river. Water levels in the Regulating Reservoir between here and Pelton Dam upstream move up and down as much as 20 feet.
The Reregulating Dam is the first barrier reached by adult salmon and steelhead. Part of the original fish ladder between Pelton and Round Butte is being used for salmon rearing. Adult fish returning to spawn swim up a fish ladder and into a holding pen. Fall chinook are returned to the lower river to spawn in the wild; other adult fish are used as brood stock for the next generation. Upstream adult migration will become viable again after the completion of a more than $60 million project to restore downstream migration of juvenile fish.
