Steelhead Tracking Study
PGE fish biologists clip fins on steelhead smolts as part of a study using implanted radio tags to track fish migration habits in Lake Billy Chinook and its tributaries. Studies determined that most smolts are unable to find the Round Butte Dam’s downstream bypass due to the swirling currents in Lake Billy Chinook.

Project planned to restore downstream migration
PGE will build a 270-foot underwater tower behind Round Butte Dam, at a cost of $60 million. The tower, to be completed in spring 2009, will speed up and redirect river flows. Migrating fish will be screened at the intake and trucked downstream. The project will restore salmon and steelhead runs to the upper Deschutes for the first time since the 1960s.
