Hillsboro challenges community
The Hillsboro City Council launched the Hillsboro Green Power Challenge in April. The challenge, the first of its kind in Hillsboro, runs through the end of June, and is designed to promote environmental sustainability and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. During the challenge, residential and business customers are encouraged to purchase renewable energy from PGE.
The challenge is a continuation of the city’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. The city already purchases enough green power to cover all of the electricity used at its Civic Center, which is more than 1.9 million kilowatt hours of renewable power.
This is enough power to offset approximately 1 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in one year, which is equivalent to not driving 1.9 million miles. CO2 is a major contributor to climate change.
Through the community-wide challenge, the city’s goal is to generate 300 new renewable sign-ups by June 30, 2010. If you have friends or family in Hillsboro and they haven’t yet signed up for renewable energy, this is a great time to help them get on board.
PGE applauds Mayor Jerry Willey and the City of Hillsboro for their leadership in making this green power challenge happen as a way to increase Hillsboro’s renewable power participation rate.
