Our parks provide a valuable service to the public. They help protect natural areas, develop the economy by attracting tourism, and provide recreational and learning opportunities for families.
Ensuring the future: hydroelectric relicensing
Hydroelectric power forms the core of PGE’s electricity generating systems. In addition to electricity and recreational opportunities, our facilities provide fish and wildlife habitat.
Operating licenses for the hydro projects are issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a period of 30 to 50 years. Over the last several years, all of PGE’s hydro projects have received new operating licenses. The terms of these were developed in an open and public process. The new licenses balance multiple interests and diverse community needs.
Protecting fish
The next time you’re fishing at one of our parks, you can thank our fish biologists. PGE has a corps of fish biologists and technicians because we’re committed to helping preserve the fish runs in rivers where we have hydropower generating plants. For regularly updated information on salmon and steelhead runs in these rivers, visit the Protecting Fish section.
Learning opportunities
Our hydro projects and parks provide a variety of learning opportunities, including hydro tours for school children. We also host special events at our parks, including Accessible Fishing Days, Eagle Watch, Lake Billy Chinook Day and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Free Fishing Day.
For more information on these events, call the PGE Parks Information Line, 503-464-8515.
