 Heating Heating
Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable.

Turn down the heat at night and when you’re away — a programmable thermostat will do this automatically. You can save as much as 10 percent a year on your heating and cooling costs by turning your thermostat back seven to 10 degrees for eight hours every night.

For information on programmable thermostats, e-mail the PGE Energy Experts or give us a call at 800-722-9287 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

Close fireplace and wood stove dampers when they’re not in use. Leaving them open is like keeping a four-foot window wide open during the winter.

Make sure heating registers are clean and not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes. Check your furnace filters once a month and clean or replace them as needed.

If you can control the temperature in each room, don’t heat rooms you don’t use regularly more than 55 or 60 degrees. Turn down the thermostat and close the door.

Close or block foundation vents during the heating season (make sure to open them again in the spring).

Turn kitchen and bath exhaust fans off when the job is done. They can expel a houseful of warm air in no time.
