 Washing Machine Washing machine
Use warm or cold water instead of hot whenever possible. Hot wash, warm rinse costs 15 times as much as cold wash, cold rinse.

Fifteen minutes of presoaking and five minutes of agitation gets clothes cleaner than 15 minutes of agitation.

Don’t under- or overload the washer.

Make the switch
Need a new washer? Choose a horizontal-axis model. Today's innovative new energy-efficient washing machines offer superior cleaning performance by using less water and energy. Among the benefits:
  • They may save up to half the energy and water used by conventional machines of the same size.
  • Clothes are cleaner, and will last longer because of the gentle action.
  • Spin speeds are faster, removing more moisture, reducing drying time — saving even more energy costs.
  • They may save up to $90 a year compared to a five-year-old washer.
Compare energy usage costs on the yellow Energy Guide label on new models. Look for the Energy Star logo on the most efficient models. You may also qualify for an Oregon personal income tax credit when you purchase an energy-efficient model.
