Next Steps - Net Metering

You are responsible for the design and installation of the generation system on the customer side of the PGE meter — including engineering, design, permits, installation and wiring. You are also responsible for the costs of meeting interconnection requirements based on OPUC rules.

How to become a net metering customer

  1. After you decide to install a net metered generation system, you should immediately send PGE an Application for Net Metering Facility Interconnection. It is important to do this early in the process, because occasionally your location may have engineering or safety issues that create unforeseen complications for the interconnection. PGE will examine your system and its impact on the PGE grid and we will inform you of any issues at your proposed site.

  2. You should proceed with the Agreement for Net Metering and Interconnection Services as soon as the application for interconnection is complete and approved by PGE.

  3. When the generation system is completed and inspected by your local electrical inspector, contact the PGE net metering coordinator to arrange for the PGE inspection and net metering meter installation.

  4. After the meter installation and PGE inspection, you are done. Your next PGE bill will reflect the new meter data, and will document any power that your generation system sent back into the PGE grid.

Application for Net Metering Facility Interconnection
The application is the form that tells PGE about your generation system. We need this information to analyze the system to determine how it might impact the transmission and distribution system, and to ensure that the system is safe and will not impair power quality to you or other Customers.

Level 1 applications are for smaller (25kW and less) inverter based systems that use certified equipment and meet other requirements as detailed in the OPUC net metering rules. There is no fee for Level 1 applications.

Level 2 and Level 3 applications use the same form, and are for larger (greater than 25kW and less than 2MW) systems or systems that don’t meet Level 1 requirements. There is a fee for Level 2 and Level 3 applications detailed in the application itself.

PGE responds promptly to all applications.

Agreement for Net Metering and Interconnection Services
The agreement is the document that details your rights and responsibilities and those of PGE. The same agreement is used for all net metering generation systems. Please note that PGE needs to have the agreement from you before you turn on your generation system and before we can give you credit for net metering power sent back to the PGE grid.

Net Metering Installation and Inspection
Once the application and the agreement are completed and the generation system is installed, PGE will install a new meter that measures both power sold by PGE to the customer, and power sent from the generation system back into the PGE grid. PGE will also inspect the system to ensure it meets all the requirements for safe interconnection to the grid.
