Helping fish, securing green energy

Explore our new Web site: DeschutesPassage.com
PGE and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs have begun the process of restoring fish passage on the Deschutes River above the Pelton Round Butte hydro facility. With the fish passage and habitat restoration, Pelton Round Butte will be counted as part of PGE’s renewable energy portfolio, securing this valuable energy resource for the future. To view a video of a fish release, read a blog from a PGE fish biologist and learn more about the 273-foot underwater tower we’re building to help native fish, visit DeschutesPassage.com.

Low-cost laundry

Save energy and water on wash day
My family just returned from a few days at the beach, and it seems my washer and dryer have been running nonstop ever since. Loads of laundry can consume lots of kilowatts and hot water. I’m thankful I bought a high-efficiency clothes washer a couple of years ago that saves both water and energy. The spin cycle turns at a high RPM to squeeze out as much water as possible – that means clothes dry faster, which means my dryer uses less energy. (Check out Greener Living for our special offer on a high-efficiency clothes washer.)

Even if you're not ready to buy a new washer, there are other ways you can save energy when doing your laundry, such as washing clothes in cold water whenever possible.

Partial BPA benefits restored this month
You'll see a reduction on your PGE bill this month, thanks to an interim agreement PGE has signed with the Bonneville Power Administration. The agreement partially restores a credit you previously received. The credit should reduce average PGE residential bills by about 6 percent beginning April 15, 2008.

To learn more about this credit, read on.

Does PGE do home energy audits?

Q: Are you still running the program where someone can come to my house and assess energy efficiency? We need to figure out how insulated we are.
Thank you,

Celebrate Earth Day with us

Northwest Solar Expo,
April 19-20

Download a $2 off admission coupon for the Northwest Solar Expo at the Oregon Convention Center. PGE is helping sponsor this informative event that includes workshops, exhibitors and seminars. Find out more at the Northwest Solar Expo Web site.

SOLV IT, April 19
(Sorry, I had the wrong date listed last month). There’s no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by joining dozens of PGE volunteers to help with SOLV IT 2008 – one of the biggest Earth Day celebrations in the country!

We're teaming up with Three Rivers Land Conservancy at Council Crest Park in southwest Portland to help remove invasive, non-native plants and preserve the forest and trails. This is part of our support for West Willamette Restoration Partnership, a collaborative effort organized by Three Rivers Land Conservancy to preserve 300 acres of forest in Portland’s southwest hills. Over 55 percent of this area is infested with invasive weeds, jeopardizing the health of the forest.

You can sign up for this activity or learn about other local SOLV IT volunteer opportunities on the SOLV Web site.
