Lighting Tips
In addition to switching to compact fluorescent lights, there are other ways you can save energy on lighting. Consider these energy-saving strategies and tips.

Shopping strategies
Choose ENERGY STAR®
ENERGY STAR qualified light fixtures meet high energy-efficiency standards, so you can be sure that they’re a good choice.

Lock in energy efficiency with GU24 options
More and more ENERGY STAR fixtures and other energy-efficient lighting fixtures are now featuring GU24 technology. GU24 compact fluorescent lights have a pin base instead of a screw-in base. That means the fixture will always be energy efficient because it accepts only GU24 bulbs — never energy-wasting incandescent bulbs. Stores that sell GU24 fixtures offer GU24 compact fluorescent bulbs, too.

Have dimmers? Consider dimmable CFLs or halogen lamps
CFL fixtures are more efficient than halogen lamps. But if you want to use a dimmer, a halogen fixture might be the better choice: They’re more efficient than incandescent lamps, and dimmable CFL technology still has some drawbacks (limited dimmable range, among others). Be aware that low-voltage halogen fixtures require transformers, which may use additional energy even when the light is off.

T8 fluorescent lights are tops for your workroom, garage and laundry areas
The 4-foot-long tube fixtures with electronic ballasts save energy and provide great light for working. You won’t have the hum and flicker of older T12 fixtures.

Low-cost projects
Most lighting controls are easy to install as a do-it-yourself project, if you are comfortable with basic wiring. Just follow the product’s instructions.

Install lighting controls
Occupancy sensors, timers and dimmers all help save on lighting costs. There are many different styles available at hardware and home stores.

Choose motion detectors for outdoors lights
They help save energy and also offer a security advantage by surprising unwanted intruders. You can find outdoor fixtures with motion detectors built in.

Photo sensors turn lights on at dusk and off at dawn
If you like to leave your porch light on all night for safety, a photo sensor can save energy with the automatic shutoff — you’ll never forget to turn off the lights in the morning.

Easy, no-cost behaviors
Turn off
Get in the habit of turning off lights whenever you leave a room. Teach this habit to your children, too — they’ll love reminding you!

Use task lighting to focus light right where you need it
For example, if you’re studying, a desk lamp is more efficient than lighting the whole room.

Dust your light bulbs
Dirty bulbs can reduce light output. Regularly cleaning your light bulbs helps them work more efficiently and lengthens the life of the bulb. With clean bulbs, you may not need to turn on as many lights.
