A remote getaway
PGE Parks and COVID-19
The safety of park visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners is very important to us. In late March, we temporarily closed our recreation sites to support local, state and federal public health orders. We took a phased approach to reopening, beginning in late May, and now all PGE parks are open except for Faraday Lake, which is closed until the spring of 2021 for construction.
We are following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local public health authorities and our recreation partners as we operate our park and recreation facilities.
Visitors to parks are asked to practice physical distancing from those outside their immediate party.
To help protect visitors’ health and safety, we are keeping campground showers and large-group communal areas closed, increasing the frequency of facilities cleaning and disinfecting, posting signage to promoting physical distancing, and scheduling additional staff.
The company is also working with concessionaires at PGE Parks to help them follow CDC safety guidelines.
The Deschutes National Forest is implementing fire restrictions.
Effective immediately, all open fires, including wood stoves, designated fire pits and charcoal briquette fires, are prohibited at Monty Campground.
Gas and propane stoves with an “off” setting are permitted.
Rustic camping on the peaceful Metolius River
Just upstream of Lake Billy Chinook, this campground along the lower Metolius River offers fishing and camping in a peaceful setting.
While Monty Campground can accommodate a small RV or trailer, it is best suited for tent camping. There is no electricity at the campground, and the access roads can be extremely rough so it’s best to take it slow and steady.
The dozen campsites each include a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. You must bring your own drinking water. Vault toilets are available.Created by Round Butte Dam, Lake Billy Chinook is the highlight of the area. It fills the canyons of the Crooked, Metolius and Deschutes rivers, creating 72 miles of shoreline and supporting fish habitat for bass, trout, salmon, whitefish, suckers, minnows and dace. The surrounding rugged hills and evergreen forests offer homes for bald eagles, mule deer, coyote, black-tailed jackrabbit and cougars.
The park is located in the Deschutes National Forest. PGE manages this site in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.
