8 steps to build an emergency supply kit.

It’s National Preparedness Month, and the wildfires and hurricanes that have hit recently are sober reminders of how important it is to be prepared. Are you ready if our area is faced with a disaster or emergency situation? Here’s how to create and maintain a basic emergency supply kit for your home.

To make it easier, focus on just one step per week. You’ll be done by Thanksgiving!

  1. Water: At least three days worth – one gallon per person per day.
  2. Food: Three-day supply of nonperishables, and pet food, if needed.
  3. Communications: Solar or car charger for mobile phone, and NOAA weather radio.
  4. Plan & records: Family plan – how to communicate, where to meet. Copies of ID, insurance, and other records.
  5. Safety: First aid, flashlight, whistle, dust mask, plastic sheeting, duct tape, multi-tool or pocket knife, wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, cash, local maps and compass.
  6. Hygiene: Sanitation supplies, medications and personal hygiene items.
  7. Shelter and comfort: Tent, sleeping bags, extra clothing, sweets, toys and books.
  8. Review and restock: Swap out food, water, batteries and medications periodically.

We’re planning ahead, too

At PGE, we have a team working to make sure we’re ready for major emergencies. That includes running simulation drills and fine-tuning our plans based on what we learn during the drills.

Another important part of the job is strengthening relationships with cities and counties so we can communicate and coordinate well if an event happens.
