Share these tips to remind your kids to save energy when they’re home.

Do you have tweens or teens at home this summer while you’re at work? They may be playing video games, taking extra showers, fixing snacks and stacking up piles of laundry. It can all add to your energy bill.

We know that sometimes it can be challenging to keep a family budget balanced. To help you out, we’ve put some easy tips to keep energy costs in check with extra folks at home. Print out these reminders to post on the refrigerator, or forward to your family from your phone.

8 ways you can help the family budget — and the environment!

  1. Turn off media: TVs, game consoles, cable and computers can all be big energy users, so turn them off when you’re done using them.
  2. Hit the light switch: Leaving a room? Always remember to flick off the lights.
  3. Use a shower timer: See if you can keep it to 10 minutes or less to help save hot water.
  4. Avoid the oven: Use the microwave instead to heat up food.
  5. Close the fridge door quickly: The longer you keep it open, the more energy it wastes.
  6. Kill energy vampires: Be sure to unplug phone or table chargers whenever you’re not using them because they suck energy even when they’re not charging anything.
  7. Don’t go too chill: Keep cooling set to 75 to 78 degrees for energy efficiency. If you’re using a fan, turn it off when you leave the room.
  8. Wash clothing in cold: If you toss in a load of laundry, choose the cold wash setting.
