Marquam Substation and Power Line Upgrades

A new substation and underground cables were brought online as part of the Marquam Project.

As we work toward Oregon’s clean energy future, we’re strengthening the energy grid to make it smarter, more efficient and more reliable for you. In March 2019, we completed our large, multiyear Marquam project.

The new Marquam Substation and underground power line upgrades are important to the downtown corridor and South Waterfront community. In fall 2017, our crews began work to replace 60-year-old underground equipment in the downtown corridor, including building a new substation.

At 4 a.m. on March 10, 2019, we deenergized the grid in half of a 61-block area in order to connect the new underground lines to the grid, then we restored power. Two weeks later, on March 24, we repeated this process. This careful approach — split between two dates — prevented overloading the system, ensured crew and public safety, and minimized disruptions to downtown.

Building a brighter future for you

This is just one of many projects we’re working on to enhance and modernize the energy grid, making it smarter and more resilient, and creating a platform for a clean energy future.

Thank you for your patience as we strengthen the energy grid.
