As we work toward Oregon’s clean energy future, we’re strengthening the energy grid to make it smarter, more efficient and more reliable for you. Part of this work includes an upgrade to our St. Mary’s substation on SW Jenkins Road. We’re updating equipment to incorporate the latest smart grid technologies, improve reliability and safety, and accommodate growth in Washington County.
When completed, our new equipment and structures will remain within the existing fence line and within our property. Following construction, we’ll add additional landscaping and screening around the substation, and we’ll work with the City of Beaverton to meet their building and landscaping standards and guidelines. We plan to begin construction in late 2019.
If you would like to know more about the improvements we’re proposing for the St. Mary’s substation project, please join us for an informational meeting:

What can you expect during this construction?
While you may hear some construction noise during work hours, you shouldn’t experience any disruption to your commute or daily routine. Your power will not be interrupted, and this construction work will have no major impact on the adjacent streets. Nearby trails, sidewalks and MAX stops will remain open. All of the improvements will be taking place inside the substation fence, and the fencing and landscaping will not be affected.
We’re taking steps to ensure your safety. Here’s how you can help:
- Follow directions from any flaggers or signs used to keep drivers, pedestrians and workers safe.
- Please avoid all work areas and equipment, and make sure children know to never touch the equipment.
Building a brighter future for you
When complete, this substation upgrade will increase service reliability for the nearby area and help improve overall system operations for all of our customers. This is just one of many projects we’re working on to enhance and modernize the energy grid, making it smarter and more resilient, and creating a platform for a clean energy future.
Thank you for your patience as we strengthen the energy grid.
