Strengthening the Energy Grid

New substation and upgraded power lines coming to downtown Portland

Marquam Substation Project Goals

The new Marquam substation and underground power line upgrades are important to the downtown corridor and South Waterfront community. In fall 2017, our crews began work to replace 60-year-old underground equipment in the downtown corridor, including building a new substation.

The goals for this project are to:

  • Build a new substation to directly serve and support the downtown corridor.
  • Replace aging power lines with the latest smart grid technologies.
  • Develop a more reliable and resilient grid to serve the downtown corridor and reduce unintended power outages.

In all these locations, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can expect the closure of one lane and possible sidewalk closures. Flaggers and traffic cones will be used to redirect traffic. Please plan extra time for your travels in these areas.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work to make electric service smarter and more reliable.
