Portland Business Alliance, Portland General Electric release public opinion poll
Voters are less concerned with economy, more focused on family-wage job creation
Sept. 17, 2014
PORTLAND, Ore. — Today, the Portland Business Alliance and Portland General Electric released results of a public opinion survey of registered voters in four Portland-metro counties. The survey, conducted by DHM Research, showed that voters feel less concerned about how the economy is faring, but they also believe leaders need to stay focused on job creation, in particular growing family-wage jobs.
“For many people, quality of life starts with a good job. Business and community leaders can use the results of this survey to work together to find ways to strengthen the region. This is important work because our community’s economic vitality is critical to all our success,” said Jim Piro, president and CEO of Portland General Electric.
“The survey clearly showed that people in this region feel better about the economy and jobs than they did three years ago,” said Sandra McDonough, president and CEO of the Portland Business Alliance. “At the same time, however, they are concerned that our region, like so many others across the country, is losing those important middle-wage jobs that are fundamentally important in any economy, and they want leaders to focus on retaining and growing those jobs.”
This survey follows a similar poll conducted by DHM on behalf of the Alliance and PGE in 2011 that revealed voters had a high level of concern about the impact of the recession on their lives and on the ability of government to deliver quality services. The 2014 poll showed that concern has subsided, but job growth and security remained front of mind for a majority of respondents.
