EPA recognizes Portland General Electric with Green Power Leadership Award
National awards honor leading green power suppliers
Dec. 3, 2014
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland General Electric announced today that it received a 2014 Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The annual awards recognize the country’s leading green power suppliers for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation’s voluntary green power market. EPA presented Portland General Electric with the award at an event held in conjunction with the 2014 Renewable Energy Markets Conference in Sacramento, California.
Portland General Electric was one of only four green power suppliers nationwide to receive a Green Power Supplier of the Year Award. The award recognizes green power providers for outstanding efforts, initiatives and programs that significantly advance the development of green power sources.
“We are proud to receive this prestigious award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,” said Carol Dillin, PGE’s vice president for customer strategies and business development. “Our customers are the heart of this program. Their voluntary commitment to buying renewable power inspires us to keep raising the bar on the programs we offer.”
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, eligible biomass, and low-impact hydro. Using green power accelerates the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector; a sustainability effort PGE is proud to support.
“EPA is pleased to recognize Portland General Electric with a Green Power Supplier of the Year award for its leadership in expanding the nation’s renewable energy industry,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “Through its support and development of new renewable energy capacity, Portland General Electric is helping to address climate change and put our country on a path to a future powered by renewable resources.”
PGE’s Renewable Power Program was established in 2002 to create affordable renewable energy alternatives for its customers. Comprised of three regionally-sourced renewable power products, the program now serves more than 109,000 customers, ranking first in the nation for total number of participating renewable power customers and megawatt-hours delivered, as reported by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In 2013, PGE’s renewable energy sales exceeded 980 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) and achieved a customer participation rate of more than 12 percent. In total, PGE’s Renewable Power Program has supplied customers with more than 4 billion kWh of renewable energy and prevented more than 5 billion pounds of CO2 emissions since 2002. PGE also received Green Power Leadership Awards in 2006, 2008, and 2010.
National renewable energy retailer Green Mountain Energy Company has assisted PGE in selling renewable power plans to customers since 2001. Renewable energy and carbon offsets provider, 3Degrees, supplies PGE with the renewable power for these voluntary options.
